Life at STA Republic Polytechnic

Podcast

In this project, we applied the skills learned in class to produce an individual podcast based on a common class topic. I developed my own unique script and incorporated various sound effects—both directly and indirectly related to the dialogue—to create a more immersive listening experience. For the intro, I used EQ techniques to design an old-television audio effect, serving as a distinctive hook to draw listeners in.

Soundscape

This project was particularly interesting because we were required to select a piece of art and create a soundscape that reflected the events and atmosphere depicted in it. I began by analysing the artwork and identifying its key elements—the crashed plane, parts of it submerged in a river, the surrounding forest environment, and a group of women escaping and exploring the area. These observations guided my sound design choices.

Using online resources, I sourced and layered sound effects such as women’s footsteps on grass, forest ambience, mechanical noises for the damaged plane, wind to represent the dark haze from the engine, animal sounds, and water ripples for the river. By piecing these elements together, I crafted a soundscape that aimed to bring the artwork to life and immerse the listener in its narrative.

Bard walking in a forest

Sound Effects for a Bard

In this classwork, we were tasked with creating a unique sound effect tailored to a specific character. I was assigned a bard walking through a forest. Drawing inspiration from Genshin Impact’s character Venti, I developed several key elements to shape the soundscape.

For instance, the bard’s footsteps are light and delicate, reflecting their nimble movement. I incorporated a gentle string instrument to mimic the melody of a lyre, adding a musical layer that complements the character’s whimsical nature. Additionally, I included subtle sound cues to represent items in the bard’s backpack, such as the clinking of gems or small trinkets, to enhance the sense of realism and detail in the environment.
